Impossible Foods launches chicken substitute in U.S. restaurants

September 13, 2021 by admin

Impossible Foods’ chicken substitute at Fuku

Impossible Foods on Tuesday launched its meatless chicken nuggets in restaurants and announced plans to bring the new offering to supermarkets by the end of the month.

In the last decade, chicken has overtaken beef as Americans’ top meat choice, making it a target for the companies like Impossible that are looking to replace or reduce consumption of animal meat. The Impossible Chicken Nuggets help the company catch up to rival Beyond Meat, which launched chicken tenders in U.S. restaurants this July, more than two years after discontinuing its original chicken alternative.

Impossible’s meatless nuggets use soy as the protein source. However, unlike its meat-free burgers and sausage, the nuggets do not contain heme, which is produced from genetically modified yeast.

While Impossible has secured approval from the Food and Drug Administration to sell products made with the additive in the United States, China and the European Union have barred its products because of that ingredient, posing a setback to its global ambitions.

Touting product benefits

To convince consumers to try the plant-based poultry alternative, Impossible is touting the nuggets’ environmental and health benefits. Based on preliminary estimates from Impossible, the nuggets use roughly 48% less land and 43% less water than chicken-based nuggets, and generate more than a third less greenhouse gas emissions. The Impossible nuggets contain 40% less saturated fat and 25% less sodium than a chicken nugget, according to the company.

CHICAGO (NewsNation Now) — Just about every major holiday has one thing in common: Chain restaurants offering freebies and deals to get you into the drive-through or at the counter at some point during the holiday period. Labor Day is one of the biggest, and we’ve put together a handy run-down of what to get and where to find it.

Note: Some deals may not be available at every location of the restaurants mentioned thanks to franchising. Supply chain difficulties may also make certain items hard to find.

How does monoclonal antibody treatment work? A doctor explains

There are definitely fewer specials this year than in previous years, likely due to labor and supply shortages linked to the pandemic.

7-Eleven: Get a small Slurpee for $1 at the iconic convenience store, which has been expanding recently. This deal is actually good through the 7NOW app through October.

Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s: Get subscribed to the email list for these places by Sept. 4 and enjoy a BOGO deal on popular burgers on Labor Day. Get the Sourdough Star at Carl’s Jr. and 1/3-pound Angus Burger at Hardee’s.

Checkers/Rally’s: Print a coupon from the chains’ website and present it for a free large order of fries, no purchase required, through Labor Day. Free fries!

  • We asked for the best vegan, plant-based dishes in Boston. Here are your favorites.

Wondering where to order your next Greek, Japanese, or Russian meal? Reddit, as usual, has you covered.

On Saturday, a Reddit user posed a question to Boston residents who were born outside of the United States: What is the best source for your native cuisine?

“I was born and raised in Australia, and r/australia has had some interesting answers to this question,” u/bitpusher wrote. “In Boston, the two best (only?) Aussie options are KO Catering & Pies (soon to be Seabiscuit) and Cuppacoffee. Let me know where you’re from and where (name & location) we can find the best example of your grub.”

Recommendations flooded in, touting local restaurants that specialize in cuisine from China, Italy, Somalia, Turkey, Venezuela, and beyond. Indian restaurants were frequently recommended, with users naming Honest in Lowell, Mela in the South End, Singh’s Cafe in Wellesley, Godvari in Woburn, and Shan-A-Punjab in Brookline as among of the best.

African cuisine was also well-represented, and users called out restaurants like Obosá in Roslindale and Suya Joint in Roxbury for Nigerian food, Tawakal Halal Café for Somali cuisine, and Baraka for North African fare.

Ittoku in Cambridge, Isshindo Ramen in Allston, and Itadaki in the Back Bay were all given high praise for Japanese food, while Cafe

Arepa Lady is a Jackson-Heights restaurant known for its authentic arepas and Colombian cuisine. It will open at the venue in November, a restaurant spokesperson said, in a space that is connected to the market’s outdoor garden area. It will also come with a bar.

Urban Vegan Roots will open at the location sometime in the fall and it will serve vegan pizzas, waffles and burgers. Its owners operate one other vegan-themed establishment which is located in Manhattan.

“Everyone will be open and operating by end of the year,” said Steve Lysohir, who is the president of EJ Stevens, the Astoria-based development company behind the project.

The warehouse, which is 18,000 square feet, comes with high ceilings, open floor
