13 Reading schools get more than $450,000 to provide healthy food to students | Local News

Thirteen Reading School District elementary schools are among 288 across the state to get federal dollars to help provide fresh fruit and vegetables to students.

The state is providing a total of $7 million to help make sure kids get healthy snacks during the school day. Reading schools will receive a total of $451,800.

The grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and administered by the state Department of Education.

“Healthy, nutritious meals are essential to a child’s growth and success,” Education Secretary Noe Ortega said in a statement announcing the grants. “These fresh food grants will help ensure students have access to fresh produce that they may not be introduced to otherwise, while also supporting their physical and academic growth.”

The grants prioritized schools with the highest rates of students who qualify for free and reduced price meals. Schools receiving funding are required to spend most of the money on buying fresh fruits and vegetable and must  develop a plan to establish partnerships to reduce other costs.

Schools receiving the grants must also provide nutrition education to students but may not use the grant money to do so.

Ada Osakwe, founder and managing director of Nuli.

Ada Osakwe started Nuli as a juice delivery company operating out of her kitchen and delivering to customers via motorbikes. She has since expanded to selling a range of food and drink products in the biggest supermarkets in the country, as well as six cafés between Lagos and Abuja. Osakwe tells James Torvaney about growing the company, the challenges she encountered and the opportunities in the healthy food industry.

Give us a snapshot of your business.

Nuli Juice is a healthy fast-casual dining brand. Our mission is to galvanise healthier lifestyles through fresh, locally grown food.

Our food and drinks are prepared with produce sourced locally from indigenous farmers. For example, fonio stir-fry, cassava waffles, and fruit juices.

We currently have six physical stores in Lagos and Abuja. These are a mix of larger stores – with ample seating space where people can eat, have meetings, and relax – and smaller outlets more focused towards ‘grab and go’ customers. We also provide branded Nuli products to supermarkets and hotels, and manufacture drinks and snacks for other retailers.

Though it’s fleeting, summer is *here*, folks, and ICYMI, this is the season for sipping fruit smoothies while you’re sitting poolside, chilling on your roof in the heat, or whipping up a yummy (and nutritious!) midday snack. However, it’s easy to go a ~little overboard~ when adding ingredients to your smoothies, making them less-than-healthy, per se. (But hey, not everything has to be about #health, so if you’re not concerned, just make what’s most delicious to you!)

First things first, making a nutritious smoothie is all about what you put in there. “When making a smoothie, the goal should be to make a nutrient-rich drink that helps you feel satisfied,” explains Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CPT. “Adding sources of fiber, lean protein, and healthy fats are one of the best ways to do this. You want to avoid large amounts of added sugars, however, since this often provides little nutritional value or fullness.” That means being mindful of the spoonfuls of granulated sugar you add, but also being weary of how much fruit juice you throw into your smoothie, since that can contain large amounts of sugar, too.

If you need a bit of inspo, think

Farmers markets are growing their role as essential sources of healthy food for rich and poor

For many Americans, buying fresh local food at one of the estimated 9,000 farmers markets across the U.S. is one of summer’s pleasures. But farmers markets aren’t just nice amenities. Over the past 18 months, many have filled food supply gaps caused by COVID-19 shutdowns.

While numerous farmers markets shut down at the start of the pandemic, many soon reopened under state or local guidelines that mandated masks, social distancing and other precautions.

When grocery store supply chains were disrupted, consumer interest in local foods spiked, along with concerns about exposure to the coronavirus while shopping. Farmers market managers adapted swiftly, experimenting with options like prepackaged goods and drive-thru pickup.

In fact, many farmers markets enjoyed their strongest-ever sales in 2020. Affluent shoppers became more interested in buying local food, while lower-income buyers were able to use federal benefits like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Stepping into this expanded role was no mean feat – but we know from our research in city planning and urban food systems that with adequate support, marketplaces respond vigorously to crises and opportunities.
