Community colleges
have ally in Newsom

I am a community college student that has adapted online learning since March 2020. I strongly oppose this recall election because Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed the most recent budget that benefits California community college students by allotting $100 million for student housing and food insecurity. Newsom has supported and enacted policies that benefit the most vulnerable groups in California, including low-income students like myself.

This recall is a blatant attack on the civil rights, liberties, and policies that are supported by the vast majority of Californians. My future and the futures of other young people in the state are dependent on preventing California from going backward. To protect the future we’re working toward, please vote no in this recall.

Realism would lead
to no vote on recall

No matter what your opinion is of Gov. Gavin Newsom, please stop and think carefully before you vote yes on the recall.

Our state is obviously in serious trouble brought on by forces of nature — not politics: wildfires, drought, water scarcity, the delta variant. One can’t

International food festival in Morristown hopes to help immigrant families integrate into the community

The HOLA Lakeway International Food Festival kicked off Saturday featuring music, games, and of course — food!

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — An international food festival kicked off in Morristown on Saturday afternoon. There, families had the chance to enjoy food from across Central and South America while listening to music from different cultures.

The event was hosted by HOLA Lakeway, which facilitates the integration of immigrant families into the community. They teach people about where to go for services and helps people feel at home in Lakeway. Organizers also hoped the event would contribute to the area’s local economy by attracting people to visit, eat and shop.

“It’s a lot of food and it’s a lot of entertainment for the families,” said one organizer.

It was held in the Morristown Farmer’s Market, and visitors had the chance to shop local foods while enjoying the flavors and aromas of recipes from across different cultures.

For many families in the community, the event was eagerly welcomed. Organizers had to cancel last year’s event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It lasted all day Saturday, from 10 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. It was free to attend.

“This just helps us get awareness out there of

Cashion shares healthy eating habits through EFNEP | Community

BANNER ELK — Avery County residents are going green—on their dinner plates, that is.

Melanie Cashion, who is known across the county as the “food lady,” is helping individuals and families across the local area eat better and live healthier lives through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program.

EFNEP is a federally funded program through the Avery County Agriculture Extension Service which teaches new skills to families, individuals and communities to help them overcome barriers to healthy eating and physical activity.

Through teaching a series of 10 classes, Cashion is tasked with going into schools, civic organizations and homes to educate individuals and families on healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices, such as preparing and eating more meals at home, making healthy food and drink choices, increasing physical activity and limiting TV time.

When going out to the community and sharing the benefits of EFNEP to clubs like the Rotary Club of Avery County, Cashion enthusiastically shares the positive impact the program has made on the lives of children and adults alike, with the latter being the group that Cashion is especially passionate about.

“In one class, it was a group of young, pregnant mothers. One mother did not
